A commercial electrical shutdown is a planned outage that lets electricians safely upgrade your service, replace switchgear or swap panels. Planned well, it can happen overnight or over a weekend, with critical loads on temporary power and your staff and customers told well in advance. The work comes down to five things: scope, schedule, utility coordination, temporary power and communication.
Why do businesses need planned electrical shutdowns?
Some electrical work can’t be done safely with the power on. Replacing a main breaker, swapping switchgear, upgrading a service or tightening connections in gear all require the equipment to be de-energized. Working on live equipment isn’t a shortcut. It’s how people get hurt.
Common reasons for a planned shutdown:
- A service upgrade to add capacity for new equipment, AC or EV chargers
- Replacing aging switchgear, main breakers or distribution panels
- Maintenance that needs de-energized gear, like cleaning and tightening
- Tenant build-outs and remodels that tie into existing panels
- Repairs after a failure, once the immediate emergency is handled

Start with a site survey and a clear scope
Every good shutdown starts with knowing exactly what will lose power. Your electrician should walk the site and confirm:
- What each breaker and panel actually feeds, not just what the labels say
- Which loads are critical and which can simply go dark
- Equipment that needs a controlled shutdown and restart, like servers, compressors, elevators or production machines
- Life-safety systems, including fire alarm panels, emergency lighting and exit signs
- Anything shared with neighbors, such as a common service in a strip center
Mislabeled circuits are common in older buildings and in spaces that have changed tenants a few times. Finding them during the survey beats finding them in the middle of shutdown night.
When is the best time to schedule an electrical shutdown?
The right window depends on how your business runs. Common choices:
- Retail stores: overnight after closing, finished before the morning crew arrives
- Restaurants: after close, with extra planning for walk-in coolers and freezers
- Offices: weekends, with IT on hand to shut down and restart servers properly
- Warehouses and plants: planned maintenance windows, holiday shutdowns or slow seasons
- Multi-site businesses: one location at a time, using the same plan at each store
In Texas, weather belongs in the schedule too. A daytime outage in a McAllen or Dallas summer turns a building into an oven fast, so overnight work or cooler months make a real difference. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and utility crews can get pulled to storm restoration, so leave room in the calendar and have a backup date ready.
How do you coordinate with the utility and the city?
If the work touches your main service, the utility is part of the plan. In much of Texas, the company that owns the lines and meter isn’t the retail provider on your bill, and it has its own process and lead time for disconnects and reconnects. Your electrician should coordinate the request and confirm the date well ahead of the shutdown.
Permits and inspections come next. Service and equipment changes usually need an electrical permit, and many cities won’t let the utility restore power until the work passes inspection. Requirements vary by city, so build the inspection into the timeline instead of assuming an inspector will be available on a Sunday morning.
What about temporary power?
Temporary power keeps critical loads running while the permanent equipment is down. Usually that means a rental generator sized for the loads you choose, connected by temporary cabling or a temporary feed to specific panels.
A few things to settle early:
- Which loads go on temporary power, and how big they are
- Where the generator will sit, and how cables will be routed and protected
- Fuel for the full outage window, plus a margin if the job runs long
- Whether an existing standby generator can carry some of the load
- How the fire alarm and other life-safety systems will be covered, including whether a fire watch is required
Safety note: Temporary generators must be connected by a qualified electrician using approved methods. A generator tied into building wiring without proper transfer equipment can backfeed utility lines and endanger line workers and your own crew.

Who needs to know about the shutdown?
Communication is where a lot of shutdowns go sideways. Make a list and assign someone to each call:
- Staff and managers: the date, the hours and what will and won’t work
- Tenants and neighbors on shared services
- Customers, if hours change or services pause
- Alarm and fire alarm monitoring companies, so an outage doesn’t trigger a false dispatch
- IT, refrigeration and equipment vendors who need to shut down or restart systems
- Property management or corporate facilities, for multi-site and leased locations
How long will the power be off?
It depends on the scope. Swapping a single panel is a very different job from replacing a building’s main switchgear. Your electrician should give you an outage estimate after the survey, including how long the utility disconnect and reconnect are expected to take and how the inspection fits in. Build in a cushion. Old gear sometimes reveals damaged wiring or corroded connections once it’s opened up, and those need to be fixed before the power goes back on.
What happens on shutdown day?
A well-run shutdown follows a written sequence that everyone has seen in advance:
- Critical equipment is shut down in order, and temporary power is confirmed
- Power is disconnected, locked out and tested to verify it’s actually off
- The work is done, with go or no-go checkpoints along the way
- The new equipment is tested and inspected
- Power is restored in stages, and equipment is brought back online and checked
Ask your electrician what the backup plan is if something unexpected turns up once the covers come off. A good contractor has one before the lights go out.
Afterward, you should get updated panel schedules and labels, plus records of what was replaced and tested.
